Streets ahead

Hammersmith and Fulham Council in London, UK has invested #8 million in town centre improvements. It has produced a document entitled Streetsmart describing the council's commitment to good design, high standards and smarter streets. The Council is a Beacon Council for streets and highways works. The first project was to transform Lyric Square in Hammersmith. The resulting square consists of limestone and granite paving with a water feature, specially designed lighting and two lines of pleached trees. Further investment in Hammersmith, Fulham and Shepherds Bush has led to road resurfacing, footway widening, replacement of existing paving stones with York stone, decluttering of pedestrian areas and installation of well-designed street furniture. The work has been coherently planned with collaboration between different council departments. All proposed work is assessed using the Streetsmart Healthcheck with reference to safety, asset and quality. The Streetsmart design guide explores five streetscene components in detail: footways, street furniture, carriageways, engineering schemes and maintenance.
