Driven by a desire to save lives
This article summarises the contents of a speech by Charles Oakley, Head of Vehicle Safety and Engineering at TRL, at a press briefing at the opening of TRL's new research centre in the UK in 2005. Mr Oakley envisaged movement into a new era of safety research. Passive safety has improved injury statistics, with new research focusing on reducing the severity of injuries. Advances in active safety will help drivers reduce the speed of accidents or avoid them altogether. Outdated European legislation intended to enhance road safety is inhibiting technological developments with the potential to save lives. Work on telematics and electronic control of vehicle steering and braking is being blocked by UN Conventions. The first UN 'global road safety week' will be held in April 2006. Ian Simmons, Head of Vehicle Technology at TRL, was concerned about the current safety record of heavy goods vehicles on UK roads, particularly the number of truck rollovers.
