Bombardier's Zefiro Makes an Impact
This article describes the prototype high-speed train called the Zefiro (Bombardier-Transport, Milan, Italy). This new train, with futuristic looks, is based on the use of service-proven components but adds changes in the interior and exterior appearance and flexibility of layout. For example, in the Zefiro, it will be possible to reconfigure the passenger spaces at any time between two missions in order to adapt the capacity offered in each class to the actual number of places reserved. The author describes the influence of aeronautic design on the Zefiro's contours and front-end, as well as on the seating. The new train has improved aerodynamic performance and an optimized center of gravity which combine to have a favorable effect on stability, particularly in cross-winds. The author also discusses the operating costs relative to the number of seats provided, the specifications of two different Zefiro products available (different train lengths, different speeds), and the composition of a Zefiro trainset. One table summarizes the common characteristics of the Zefiro trains and the specifications of the Zefiro 250 and 300+.
