Sweden: The World's First Biogas-Powered Train

This article describes the first biogas-powered train, which entered service in October 2005 in Sweden, on the line between Linkoping and Vastervik (a 116 km line in the southeast of Sweden). The two motors used (Volvo GH 10 B with 214 kW each) are silent and their emissions of gas pollutants such as particles already satisfies guidelines of Euro 5. Adding the gas tanks resulted in some loss of passenger space, but the trains include a hot drinks vending machine, power outlets for computers, and improved ventilation. The author focuses on the different ways to obtain biogas, the need for production of other clean fuels, cost considerations, and the use of biogas in other modes of transportation, including buses and private automobiles.
