The Future Shape of Maintenance
This article examines the difficulties of maintaining passenger processing systems at airports, and offers examples of how some airports are meeting the challenge. The airport industry's IT-based systems are constantly undergoing upgrades and changes. Implementation of common-use IT systems that can be shared by multiple airlines can be more efficient, as well as simplify travelers' experiences. The article focuses on British Columbia's Vancouver Airport as an example of one that has very successfully met these challenges. It describes how the airport outsourced for integrated service support in IT operations and maintenance, leading to a productive and cost-saving partnership between the airport and two private firms. The article concludes with the suggestion that outsourcing may very well be the wave of the future.
