Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar): Survey of CN Rail Track Near Yale, British Columbia
This project was initiated in response to research related to railway ground hazards such as rock falls, landslides, snow avalanches and floods along railway corridors. The track in question, near Yale, British Columbia, was chosen as a test site to evaluate light detection and ranging (LiDAR) as a mapping tool. The mapping survey was completed to help produce accurate elevation data. Using a digital elevation model (DEM), cut and fill quantities can be estimated during the analysis process. The DEM can then be used in conjunction with a geographic information system (GIS) to enable researchers to model various scenarios along the railway lines.
