Picturing China's Automotive Future

This article describes research conducted into the market potential for Chinese auto manufacturing and design on a global scale, which it predicts to be a possible major segment within the next two decades. The article notes that much of the delay in the Chinese market can be traced to governmental restrictions and infrastructure lag, as there are fewer roads, parking spaces, and gas stations than necessary for a healthy market. The following predictions are offered: 1) the market’s growth will be steady but not necessarily exponential; 2) exports, which only take up 3% of the Chinese market currently, will increase; 3) the Chinese consumer will become better identified by manufacturers and better catered to; and, 4) the government will reform some of its current policies with regard to automotive regulation. The article also provides a number of predictions with regard to the future of this industry’s structure.
