Look Ahead: Combining RFID, RTLS and Biometrics Can Secure and Simplify Air Travel

Airports and airlines are turning to new technologies to speed processing and waiting times and to increase customer satisfaction. Radio frequency identification devices (RFID), real-time location systems (RTLS) and biometrics are being used in several airports to speed up baggage handling, screen passengers, and direct customers to select waiting areas. A typical system may eventually involve an airline issuing RFID-embedded luggage tags to a passenger, and those tags will alert the airline when the passenger arrives at the airport. Baggage will be checked at a dedicated parking area so that passengers do not have to carry it inside with them, and speeding up their arrival in the terminal will allow passengers additional time to visit retail shops or restaurants inside the airport. Passenger check-in will involve a biometric thumb scanner to validate identity. Additionally, flight delays or gate changes can be reported to the passenger via cell phone, and the system will track parking location for returning passengers. Implementing these technological innovations will ensure secure and simplified air travel, improve accuracy, and increase the profit margin for airports and airlines.
