Charting Florida's Mobility Course
This article provides extended reporting on all of Florida’s special mobility programs to supply greater accessibility to those with limited mobility. It first gives a brief history of transportation in Florida and then moves through a series of examples. Some of the cities and transit systems discussed are the city of Pembroke Pine’s Broward County Transit, which provides door-to-door service to some persons with limited transportation accessibility, and West Florida’s Sandestin Resort vanpool. A third example comes from the St. Johns County’s Sunshine Bus, which links older persons with community services and businesses such as the hospital and the grocery store. The article concludes with examples from Tampa’s TECO Line Streetcar System that runs replica Birney cars, and three transit lines from Monroe County, just south of Miami.
