Public Involvement in an Award Winning Way
This public involvement process was part of the planning effort for a road widening project in South Georgia. The current 2 lane configuration is inadequate from both capacity and safety perspectives. Along the route there is a great deal of agricultural activity involving large, slow-moving vehicles using the State Route to move from field to field. In addition, there is a great deal of through truck movement from the nearby interstate to much of the south central and south western parts of the state. This includes a lot of military activity as well. Due to the variety of road users, land uses along the route, demographics of the region and importance of the project both technically and politically, an extensive public involvement program was developed and delivered. This paper discusses the public involvement process.
