Incredible India: The World's Second Most Populous Nation Has Found that Increasing Economic Prosperity Brings With It the Need to Upgrade Infrastructure
This article describes the increasing pressure on India’s burgeoning productive potential to build new infrastructure. Although India used to face a declining transportation system that nearly curtailed economic investment, its recent commitment of US$100 billion has set many investors at ease. The nation’s National Highways Development Project’s (NHDP) largest project is the “Golden Quadrilateral,” which seeks to connect the nation’s largest cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata- and is nearly complete as of June of 2006. A number of other groups also work towards India’s transportation development with an eye toward increased economic and industrial productivity, such as the International Road Federation (IRF), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the Builders’ Association of India (BAI).
