Some Capital Ideas
The Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, MI opened in October 2004. This $48 million 115,000 square foot facility is a model for the technology and security regulations that changed air carrier service after September 11, 2001. Construction bids were awarded two weeks after September 11, although construction took three years and reflects both the risks and rewards of building through such uncertain times. Transportation Security Administration rules on baggage screening added to the price tag and caused six to eight months delay to the timetable for the project. The design is intended to be easily adaptable, allowing the facility to accommodate future growth. Innovative features were incorporated into the facility, such as changing elevations to reduce the need for stairwells and escalators. The airport serves a largely retired community and made passenger accessibility a high priority.
