PDA/GIS Data Collection: Sacramento and Alameda County Pedestrian Master Plans
Pedestrian master plans require an extensive amount of data collection effort to inventory the conditions of existing facilities. The traditional data collection process involves manual data collection and manual data entry, which causes potential data conversion errors. Personal Digital Assistive (PDA) devices simplify the data collection process, and eliminate the post-collection data entry errors. PDAs also have the ability to incorporate Geographic Information System (GIS), so the survey date can be easily published on GIS maps. This paper will provide the experience and lessons learned from the field data collection of pedestrian master plans for the County of Sacramento and the County of Alameda, California. Pendragon (PDA Electronic Survey Form Software) and ArcGIS software were used for these studies and a total of 600 intersections and 1,300 roadway segments were evaluated in Sacramento County and approximately 600 intersections and 707 roadway segments were inventoried in Alameda County. This paper provides the findings and the cost for implementing PDA data collection and pros and cons of different methods for transmitting survey data.
