Developments in pavement marking Australian standards (AS4049: implications of revisions)
A Memorandum of Understanding has existed between Standards Australia and the Commonwealth Government since 1988 that recognizes Standards Australia as the peak non-government standards body in Australia. There is also an agreement that no new Australian Standard will be developed where an acceptable international Standard already exists. Standards committee CH-003-05 has been assigned the task of reviewing Pavement Marking related Standards. AS 2009 and parts 1 and 2 of AS 4049 will have been sent for publication at the time of preparation of this paper. Part 3 is in the course of preparation. This paper covers the key changes to the standards, and looks at the impact that these changes may have on the industry. The development of Part 4 of AS 4049 will also be discussed -this part deals with a performance-based approach to the testing and approval of pavement marking materials and systems.
