Quantifying Convective Delay Reduction Benefits for Air Traffic Management Systems
This paper examines issues related to measuring the potential benefits of operational weather systems in reducing flight delays. It summarizes key aspects of convective weather disruptions, such as thunderstorms, on aviation. The paper offers suggestions regarding the characterization of weather severity and presents the results of quantifying the delay reduction benefits of two operational systems. Real time observations of system usage are recommended as a near term approach. This is followed by an analysis of specific convective weather cases before and after and operation system is introduced.
