Automated Triaxial Apparatus for Testing Unsaturated Soils

This paper describes a multifunctional automated triaxial apparatus for testing unsaturated soils. The apparatus allows the measurement of very small strain stiffness at any stress state which can be reached as part of the normal testing procedures for unsaturated soils. All three systems have full control of stress path and suction, allowing a great variety of tests to be performed, and all three have proven themselves capable of producing high quality data. The results from the testing of unsaturated silt samples showed similar trends of stiffness variations as those observed in saturated soils, but with the important additional effect of suction. Results of silica sand are presented to illustrate the type and quality of data obtained with the techniques developed.
