Pennsylvania Conducts Emergency Bridge Inspections
The collapse of a 60-ton concrete fascia beam from a Pittsburgh bridge in December 2005 has prompted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) to conduct emergency inspections of all state-owned bridges based on adjacent box beams with non-composite decks. Seven-hundred eighty-five bridges were to be inspected, and among the first 75, three were found to be deficient and were demolished by February, according to the article. The DOT determined that box beam bridges paved with asphalt are likely to deteriorate when water mixed with road salt seeps into the boxes and corrodes the pre-stressing strands. The Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials are alerting other states to this problem.
