The Future of Ticketing is Tickety-Boo
British railroads are experimenting with a variety of new ticketing technology to make rail travel more efficient. This article describes some of these new systems, including smart card and fast ticketing systems. The UK government is evaluating smart cards with the goal of implementing a uniform system within London and beyond, so that people can travel on different modes with one ticket. A catalyst for this interest in smart cards has been the success of the Oyster card system which is used by 2.6 million passengers on the London Underground.
