R&D on Signal Control Systems and Transport Operations Systems

This paper gives an overview of research and development that is being conducted by the Japan Railway (JR) East Group. Focus is on train signal control systems and rail transportation operations in general. Areas of research discussed include network signal control systems and wireless train control systems (ATACS). Improvements in transportation operations include vehicle and crew operations rescheduling support systems, switching devices, station safety equipment, crossing safety devices, and maintenance systems. The paper concludes with a discussion of how higher quality rail services to will be need in order to meet the needs of the aging population in Japan.
