Systemic Approach to Traffic Evaluation at Mostar Airport
The town of Mostar is the capital economic, cultural, and political center of the Herzegovina region, located in the southeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This article evaluates the traffic volume and capacity of the Mostar airport. The authors have determined that the present traffic volume in Mostar airport does not satisfy the capacities of the airport and is not sufficient for its normal operation. Due to severe devastation during the war, the airport had to be restructured in phases, and was completely renewed in 2002. The authors describe the general characteristics of the Mostar airport, then consider potentials in passenger and goods traffic. A final section outlines the necessary improvements in infrastructure and organization that would be needed for further development of this strategically and economically important facility. The authors conclude that Mostar airport has traffic potentials to be able to operate on a commercial basis, without depending on the town budget for support. This is due primarily to the number of pilgrims who arrive to visit Medjugorje, estimated at 80,000 travelers annually.
