ANPR - current and imminent applications

Traffic congestion is a major problem on UK roads. Intelligent transport system (ITS) technology is being used to provide driver information and to ensure compliance through enforcement. Public acceptance of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) for providing driver information is greater than that of speed cameras. ANPR is being used to record journey times and average speeds, for road use calculation and motorway incident detection. ANPR is being improved to counter detection evasion. ANPR can be used to detect vehicles entering a 'designated' area and to prevent crime. ANPR systems are to be fitted to police helicopters to identify target vehicles to police interceptor teams. ANPR could be used to prevent terrorist activity and to target organized crime across borders. Electronic fee collection using ANPR for road user charging has proved to be successful in the London congestion charging zone. Electronic Vehicle Identification has potential when a comprehensive network becomes a reality.
