Playing tag on the streets of London
Technology trials conducted by Transport for London (TfL), UK have indicated that advances in the technology used to detect vehicles in London's congestion charge zone are likely to be based on a 'tag and beacon' system rather than satellite tracking as it offers greater accuracy. Trials were conducted in 2004 to assess which technologies were best placed to improve accuracy, lower costs and make the scheme more user friendly. The study indicated that a tag and beacon system would achieve vehicle detection rates of 99.5%. TfL is likely to combine tag and beacon with an improved version of its automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system. Further trials of tag and beacon technology are being conducted in the charge zone south of the Thames. Vehicles are fitted with a tag that holds information about the vehicle. Roadside transceivers (beacons) communicate with the tags using low power radio, microwave or infra-red. Tag and beacon would allow TfL to introduce account-based charging and would allow TfL to charge users different amounts, depending on the time and frequency of movement.
