Towing and the law

This booklet provides advice and information on the regulations for towing light trailers in the United Kingdom. It does not constitute a legal statement and users are reminded that regulations can be amended periodically. It covers the light trailer / trailer equipment, use of trailers in other European countries, glossary of terms, towbars, coupling types, electrical connections, buying a trailer, driving licence, towing unbraked trailers, towing with cars or commercial vehicles under 1525 kg unladen weight, commercial towing with vehicles over 1525 kg unladen weight, registration, vehicle excise duty, insurance, manufacturer's plate, number plate, speed limits, rear view mirrors, use of outside lanes on motorways / dual carriageways, carriage of passengers, tachographs, loading, carrying livestock, maintenance, tyres, braking systems, secondary couplings (fitted to unbraked trailers), and lighting systems. Appendices include: acknowledgements, regulations and directives, and where to obtain regulations and other documents mentioned in the text.
