Gasoline Prices, Macroeconomics, and Sustainable Transportation
The cost of transportation has been impacted by recent increases in fuel prices. There is evidence that the cost of fuel is now of greater concern to the public than the perennial angst over traffic congestion. Because the majority of the oil consumed in the United States comes from foreign oil and the transportation sector is highly dependent on petroleum fuels, the economic returns from transportation investments have been diminished. In addition, the extensive use of imported fuels violates a basic principle of sustainability, that is, self-sufficiency. This paper merges findings regarding the sustainability, economics and energy to investigate the interaction of these issues. The paper closes with considerations for improving transportation planning and decision making processes.
