Using Input-Output Tables and Social Accounting Matrices in Development of Land Use-Transport Interaction Models
This paper describes the current state-of-practice in the use of standard input-output tables and related social accounting matrices in land use transport modelling. It describes the system of accounts in these tables and the use of industry, institutions, factors and commodities categories in the presentation of these accounts. It outlines the correspondence between these account relationships and the travel and spatial dependencies in a land use transport interaction model, showing how the information about money flows in these accounts can help in the development of the model parameters and functional forms. Topics include the de-margining of the retail and wholesale sectors to establish representations of goods and services flows, the treatment of the own-account vs for-hire components of transport expenditures, the handling of real estate expenditures with imputed rents, and the treatment of household and government institutions and how this differs from the treatment of industrial sectors. Throughout, the discussions help identify commonalities in the separate jargon used in the economics and land use transport modelling areas.
