Thermal Sensitivity and Fatigue Life of Gap-Graded Asphalt Mixes Incorporating Crumb Rubber from Waste Tires

The most usual asphalt mixture for thin overlays in Spanish roads is produced with a gap-graded combination of aggregates and a polymer modified binder. Nevertheless reflective cracking usually affects the overlay so that the surface of the pavement starts showing the existing network of cracks within a short period of time. The brittleness of the asphalt mixture at low temperatures and the aging of the mixtures promote the appearance and progress of the cracks. On the other hand, the correlation between the fatigue resistance of the mixture and its resistance to reflective cracking has been extensively reported. Asphalt mixes with rubber from waste tires are believed to have a high performance in the control of reflective cracking. This paper presents a study carried out on five gap-graded asphalt mixtures, where three of them containing rubber from discarded tires. Every mixture was tested at two different degrees of aging. Dynamic moduli at several temperatures ranging from -15ºC to 40ºC as well as the fatigue life of each mixture at 20ºC were measured and the results are offered to researchers to help them to build realistic models to study reflective cracking according with the real characteristics of the materials.
