THE AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE SYSTEM: CURRENT STATUS AND SOME PROPOSED REVISIONS

The status of automobile insurance reform plans as of October 1971 is reviewed as an initial step in a long-range assessment of the social implications of no-fault insurance in the U.S. The focus of the material consists of 18 revisions to the present automobile insurance system, some enacted, the rest proposed. Included are summaries of the major criticisms against the present system and against no-fault. The proposed reform programs are presented in two matrix-type tables. Topics discussed include a discussion of the auto insurance controversy, major reform programs, major no-fault programs enacted and proposed, and reform programs which emphasize retention of the fault system.
