Improving Accessibility to Public Transport for People with Reduced Mobility: Case of Oviedo, Spain

The aim of this study is to identify the problems affecting accessibility to public transport for people with reduced mobility, with the purpose of improving accessibility. The methodology used in this study consists of three main stages: the selection of relevant variables, obtaining data and the development of a GIS (Geographical Information System). To select the relevant variables we use focus group techniques. As a result of the study, we made a GIS (Geographical Information System) and a software easy to understand and consult by the user. The system displays the route via Internet, as well as any problems that may be found when travelling, such as the physical conditions of accessibility to the stop, whether the bus is adapted for those with reduced mobility, timetables, itineraries, bus schedules, etc. The conclusions relative to the case of Oviedo studied, reveal that the accessibility conditions for those with reduced mobility are still considerably poor, even though the integral accessibility plans are adjusting the urban environment to such people’s needs. However, the development of this tool enables us, as far as our knowledge permits, not only to increase accessibility for people with reduced mobility but also allows the authorities concerned to program actions on specific points of the network in order to remove the barriers that limit accessibility.
