Changing the Timing of Activities in Resolving Scheduling Conflicts

Following the growing interest in the characterization and modeling of activity scheduling and re-scheduling behavior, this paper reports the results of a study on the resolution of activity scheduling conflicts. Using empirical data collected through an Internet survey, the modification of pre-planned activities? timing to accommodate a new activity in the schedule was analyzed. That schedule adjustment was studied as an end-of-duration process using a parametric hazard duration model. The results indicate that the process of shifting forward/backward the pre-planned activities depends on the extent to what the timing of the pre-planned activities was modified. The characteristics of the implicated activities are the most important factors that explain the process of schedule change. Several correlations among the schedule modifications were found, which merit further research.
