Essex Plan: It is Easy to Get Fooled Into Thinking That the Various Strands of ITS Can Look After Themselves
This article discusses the need to integrate various aspects of intelligent transportation technologies, as demonstrated by experiences in the county of Essex in the UK. Systems integration has been achieved over a system that covers a road network of 4,660 miles, with a population of roughly 1.3 million. A traffic control center was created to manage the existing network and develop and coordinate additional systems to tie the various services together. Among the systems are smart parking signs that tell drivers where and when spaces are available in municipal garages and a real-time bus information system that tracks movements and displays data at 150 bus stops. Additional deployments are discussed, along with a new system to improve reliability of transit performance.
