4000 AD: We Know the Romans Mastered Road Design 2,000 Years Ago. So Here's an Ambitious Question: What Will Roads Be Like in 2,000 Years Time?
In this article, the author offers a personal reflection of what roads and the humans who use the roads will be like in 4,000 AD. Posing the question, "Will the wheel still be as important as it was 2000 years ago?", the author suggests that Maglev technology may be used to attach wheels to the ground, while vehicles will fly above them. And if vehicles are magnetically attached to the road, then roads can become much narrower. Long distance roads would be protected from weather in tubes and possibly from increased UV rays and other changes brought about by global warming. The bigger question, however, is how humans may change over the next 2000 years. The author concludes with the suggestion that communication will change humans most and will perhaps negate the need for roads altogether.
