United We Ride: Coordinating Human Service Transportation
This article describes the advances made by the United We Ride Initiative of the Federal Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility to provide and plan human service transportation at all levels of the United States’ government. This initiative was precipitated by Executive Order 13330, which directs the federal government to more effectively administer these types of services. The Council has advocated the use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in billing, client tracking, service dispatching, and trip planning for their initiative. The two steps the Council intends to take to further human service transportation are the establishment of coordinated service planning across all involved federal programs and the development of a more comprehensive approach with regard to special-needs passengers.
