Needed: A New Mississippi River Bridge

This article addresses the difficulties in funding the Illinois-Missouri bridge to connect St. Louis with Metro East Illinois has experienced in its ten year-long planning process. Although significant design and planning work has been conducted, with two single-pylon towers with three planes of cables being proposed and a design life of 150 years, antiquated legislation in Missouri prohibits the most available funding measures. In order to precipitate this deal without complex legislative action, the departments of transportation for both states have hired a private consultant to analyze the improvements possible to Illinois-Missouri traffic flows. Although both transportation departments would ideally like the bridge to be built (which could happen as early as 2015), they are also planning alternatives in case the legislative impediment cannot be overcome.
