A View From Across the Pond
This article discusses some of the challenges faced by the rail industry in the United States. Amtrak's chief executive was recently dismissed, which has polarized opinion among rail professionals, observers and politicians. Amtrak has also recently discontinued food service on trains between New York City and Albany. When this move was criticized by some travelers, Subway was brought in to sell sandwiches on the train. However, this test lasted only two days before Subway withdrew from the pilot project. Finding extra capacity for freight railroad also is challenging in the United States due to the sparseness of the rail network. This situation is contrasted to that of Europe, especially Cologne, where six main tracks run over the Hohenzollern Bridge.
