Performance and Exhaust Emissions of Direct-Injection Diesel Engine Operating on Rapeseed Oil and its Blends with Diesel Fuel
This paper reports on efforts to measure the effect on engine performance and emissions of mixing rapeseed oil with diesel fuel, as part of an effort to extend use of renewable fuels and cut down on fossil fuel use and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with them. It discusses earlier problems with clogged fuel filters, deposits in combustion chambers and other interior engine parts that can become sticky and suffer reduced performance. A four-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine was the basis for the study. The paper gives a description of the apparatus used in the experiment, the methodology and the test results and analysis. Elements that are important in rapeseed oil performance as a diesel additive are engine load and rotation speed. Tests suggest that rapeseed oil can be added in amounts up to 25 percent by volume, but more study is needed on engine endurance under those conditions
