Repairing Poor-Quality Longitudinal Joints
The article discusses the use of infrared joint heaters to repair longitudinal joints that have fallen into disrepair. These joints, which come to such a state with a fair amount of frequency, are caused by a relatively uncompacted edge that absorbs water, quickly ravels, and opens up a crack in areas where there is no edge support to allow for compaction. The specific case example used in this article is that of the longitudinal joints immediately in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. The joint was heated at a lower temperature than would be normally considered as well as at a higher elevation due to the synthetic resin in the jointure. Repairing nearly 1,000 feet of longitudinal joint damage, contractors were able to finish the job within two days using an HDE mini recycler to heat their test mix, which used a finer aggregate with additional binder to accommodate for the specialized use conditions.
