Map of the Month: Tonnnage Originated/Terminated, 2004

This article presents a map of tonnage of coal originated and terminated by freight rail in the United States in 2004. The map includes a brief description of broader trends in origin/termination of freight rail. The author concludes that states with high origination and low termination, particularly Wyoming (with the highest origination, but among the lowest termination), tend to be rich in natural resources while states with high termination but low origination tend to be states with high populations (such as New York). Most coal in the United States originates in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, with other origination points being Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Texas. States such as Arizona, Missouri, Georgia, and North Carolina have a relatively unbalanced termination rate due to their lack of coal as a natural resource with a relatively high energy demand.
