Balancing Production Rates in Hot Mix Operations
This article describes the proper logistical and training prerequisites for drivers in hot mix asphalt operations. It addresses broad issues of what the salient features of these operations are that drivers should know such as the material being hauled, the time the driver will be expected at the facility, the estimated cycle time, the number of loads expected per day, the scheduled tonnage per day, the access arrangements at the job site, the waiting area (if necessary), and the location where they can clean out their truck. The article also stresses the need for driver training to ensure their efficacy and job safety. Also included are brief sections where the author describes the necessity of driver training for specific tasks. These include the cycle time, site access and start up, paving, smoothness and density, start up, high production, low/erratic production, and compaction. The article emphasizes the importance of scheduling for all of these phases of hot mix operations, as the final quality of the pavement being laid depends on the proper material being brought by the trucks at the proper time.
