A380 GSE Requirements
The new Airbus A380 will present challenges in terms of ground service equipment (GSE) needs. This article provides an overview of the individual processes during an A380 turnaround based on an airport check exercise that was conducted in Frankfurt in October 2005. Several ramp scenarios were simulated. Equipment not normally part of the turnaround process were also tested. In total, approximately 40 different pieces of GSE were used, compared to about 21 for a standard turn around. Standard GSE were used for electrical power, pre-conditioning air, cargo loading, refueling and cabin servicing. Specific GSE needed for the A380 and other wide body aircraft included towing and upper deck catering equipment.
