This new nearside signal has style
This article considers a new design of nearside pedestrian crossing signal in the UK. Prepared for manufacturer AGD by automotive designers, the new box has a softer shape and more practical features. The lights used are diffused to give a uniform glow to the standing and walking figures. The new boxes have narrow field of view optics as an option: wide view had been a problem in the city of Sheffield at multi-signal staggered junctions, where pedestrians could be confused by being able to see lights for other crossings than their own. Installation has been made easier by a rotational fixing in the rear of the housing. Hinges under the box for opening improve the tactile quality, and the call button is now illuminated around the button rather than producing a separate indicator light.
