Stress factor
This article reports strengthening work in progress on an access ramp to a major motorway viaduct bridge in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The ramp is made up of two straight sections, where the deck was cut away and replaced, and the central curved section which is being strengthened in situ with additional prestress applied by external post-tensioning tendons outside the shallow box girder. The deck is to be jacked up off its bearings once the tendon ducts and anchorages have been installed; then it will be prestressed and realigned by the jacking system. The supporting concrete columns will have their heads cut back and replaced, with one column needing complete replacement. Work is being carried out from a moveable eight frame gantry rolled out in sections: from this, work was done on installing tendon ducts, deviators and anchorages, and on the way back it will be used to remove and replace the coping and parapet.
