Overview of research

This article reports research into concrete structures being carried out by researchers at the Concrete Structures Section at Imperial College London, UK. Methods for analysis and design of structures have included a triaxial finite-element model and the compressive-force path method. A method has been developed for modelling the influences on long-term deflection of early-age striking and construction loads from casting slabs above in multi-storey buildings. Improved models are being investigated for tension stiffening in non-linear finite element analysis, and research is also being carried out into strut-and-tie modelling of structures. The Concrete Durability Group aims to improve the understanding of deterioration to enable more effective design, assessment and repair of concrete structures, involving research into reinforcement corrosion, using microscopy and modelling of corrosion. Models have been developed to measure transport processes. Other research focuses on fibre-reinforced concrete, time and temperature behaviour of concrete structures and soil structure interaction in integral bridges.
