Thin on the Ground

This article examines "electronic paper," a new display technology that could increase accessibility and lower the cost of providing real-time information to public transportation users. The system combines a circuit board containing polymer transistors in an active-matrix plastic backplane and electronic ink film, which produces a material like paper. Display properties change when voltage is applied. The new system is being tested in a pilot project at Berlin Ostbahnhof Station. Not only will the system be used for large, real-time passenger information displays, but also for page-sized "e-readers" which passengers can carry with them.
