Testing and Evaluating Features of the Bay Area’s 511 System

The 511/TravInfo Project in the San Francisco Bay Area provides a great wealth of multimodal information to users on the phone and on the Web at www.511.org. Some of the most innovative features of the system are real-time traffic conditions and customized driving times. Incident data is extracted from the CHP computer aided dispatch (CAD) and link speeds are collected using field devices (Caltrans loop detectors and toll tag readers deployed by PB Farradyne). The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is committed to providing useful and accurate travel information. To ensure that the Bay Area 511 is fulfilling those commitments, project staff 1) rigorously test system components as they are deployed, 2) continually test and validate data provided by the system, and 3) conduct user evaluations to assess whether the system and data meet user needs. This paper will examine the driving times feature of the Bay Area 511 system, and the testing methods and evaluation of this feature.
