Telematics in Autostrade: from Travel Time Detection to Traffic Information on 3G Mobile Phones
In order to meet modern traffic information requirements, Autostrade has developed a system to estimate travel time on motorway sections. This system, called AutoTraf, consists of a completely automatic evaluation of traffic conditions based on an objective measurement: the time required to cover the distance between two consecutive access points. This article illustrates the basic concepts of the system, the sensorial equipment used, the information distribution channels and also hints at some future developments.
