The Serti Euroregional Project: Achievements and Perspective
European road operators have joined forces since 1996 in order to achieve better levels of road safety and traffic management over the main European road network, through so-called "Euroregional projects". These projects were launched by the European Commission in 1996, in order to foster ITS innovation and deployment. Each of the seven projects covers a specific geographic area tailored to foster cross border cooperation. They bring together project partners from road administrations, road operators, traffic information service providers, and benefit from European subsidies. The Commission expects to invest 192€ million in ITS during the period 2001-2006. Virtually all existing Member States are involved in at least one of the seven multinational investment projects (Arts, Centrico, Corvette, Serti, Streetwise, Viking and Connect). These projects will end in their current form in 2006, and all partners are working on possible plans and organizations with the Commission for the continuation of this ITS thrust. This paper aims to outline the organization of the SERTI project, chaired by France since its inception. It will also describe the main achievements of project partners, and propose perspectives for the period starting in 2007.
