The Scope of Trans-Atlantic Transport Research: Introduction to the STELLA Network

This article addresses the new transatlantic STELLA organization that has been designed to coordinate environmental and economic sustainability efforts through a transportation perspective. This perspective, brought to the fore predominately by transportation research, also has significant effects on both public and private transportation sectors on both sides of the Atlantic. The transportation research fields considered in STELLA are: transportation economics, transportation planning, psychology, geography, and transportation engineering. STELLA, or Sustainable Transport and Links and Liaisons with America, is described by the article in terms of its relations with the Network on European Communications and Transport Activity Research (NECTAR) in Europe and the Sustainable Transportation Analysis & Research (STAR) group in America. The article also describes certain findings of STELLA- clarification is needed for the scope and concept of transportation sustainability, the need for a deeper knowledge of the effects of e-commerce and ICT, the land-use context of transportation policy implementation, and the equity and efficiency of environmental issues in the context of transportation, among others. The article closes with a brief reflection on the three year history of the program (2002-2005).
