The value of a statistical life in road safety: stated preference methodologies and empirical estimates for the Netherlands
The costs of accidents make up an important part of the total external costs of traffic. A substantial proportion of accidents are fatal. In the evaluation of fatal accident costs the availability of an estimate of the Value Of a Statistical Life (VOSL) is essential. The VOSL does not reflect the value of an individual life, but is entirely based on the amount of money an individual is willing to trade-off for a small change in his or her own risk. This study aims to retrieve monetary VOSL estimates in the context of road safety for the Netherlands, by answering the question how monetary values of safety can be determined, and by applying the answer in an empirical study.
