Trade and Transportation Facilitation
This editorial discusses international trade and transportation in relation to Northeast Asia. Despite compelling economic reasons for moving towards a more liberal regulatory environment, there currently is no trilateral, or even bilateral, agreement between China, Japan and Korea. Prospects for a more liberated trade system look bright, however. Efforts to facilitate cross-border trade have to be underpinned by improvements in international logistics. The need to improve regional transportation is stimulating consideration of how an efficient transportation governance system could be structured. Such a system would combine physical infrastructure (i.e., transportation networks/facilities, and information/communications technology) and non-physical infrastructure (transportation institutions and market organizations) to influence the speed, ease and costs of cross-border freight flows.
