Jack London Square: A Fascinating Rail Bottleneck

This article describes the Jack London Square area of Oakland, California where trains, motorists and pedestrians all jostle for space in an old industrial area that has become a destination for shoppers and tourists. According to the author every day 28 to 34 Amtrak passenger trains, 12 to 26 Union Pacific freights, and a single BNSF rumble down Embarcadero West, essentially a four-lane street that divides the shopping and office area. In years past, the neighborhood was primarily industrial, but lots of shops, restaurants and offices have opened, as well as new housing developments in the old industrial buildings. Consequently, when trains pass through, impatient drivers and pedestrians tend to take chances dodging the locomotives. The article includes a collection of old and new photos of the area.
